Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Nephritis
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune-mediated inflammatory connective tissue disease that can affect systems, organs, and tissues throughout the body.
Some sources indicate that approximately 80% of patients may develop signs of kidney involvement. Kidney biopsies have confirmed that almost all patients have some degree of kidney pathology, known as lupus nephritis (LN). Lupus nephritis is the most common and most significant visceral complication of SLE. It is also the most common secondary glomerular disease and a leading cause of death among people with SLE. Clinical manifestations of lupus nephritis include varying degrees of proteinuria, hematuria, or nephrotic syndrome; a small number of patients may experience rapid deterioration in kidney function. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) does not have a disease name corresponding to “lupus nephritis.” Based on its clinical manifestations, it may be classified under categories such as “edema,” “yin-yang toxin,” “consumptive disease,” and “low back pain.”
