Xiao Jian Zhong Tang
Overview
Xiao Jian Zhong Tang originates from the Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases by Zhang Zhongjing, the medical sage of the Eastern Han dynasty. In current editions, it is primarily included in the Treatise on Cold Damage and the Essentials from the Golden Cabinet. It is a classic formula for warming and tonifying the middle burner, and relieving urgency and pain.

Formula Composition
Xiao Jian Zhong Tang consists of cinnamon twig, white peony root, fresh ginger, Chinese jujube, honey-fried licorice root, and maltose.
Note: The specific formulation ratios may vary among different sources and dosage forms; please follow the instructions for the actual product.
Traditional Actions and Indications
Traditionally used for manifestations of deficiency-cold in the middle burner, including dull abdominal pain that is relieved by warmth and pressure, poor appetite, fatigue, and palpitations. Chronic abdominal pain in children and people with deficient constitutions may also be treated when consistent with pattern differentiation.
Precautions
- Seek medical attention first for acute severe abdominal pain, right lower abdominal pain, recurrent vomiting, black stools, or high fever.
- People with diabetes should pay attention to maltose and other sugar-containing ingredients and should not use sugar-containing preparations on their own.
- People with marked abdominal distension, dampness-heat, or abdominal pain due to an excess pattern should not self-administer the formula solely because of “stomach pain.”
- Children and people with chronic diseases are advised to consult a professional before use.
