Traditional Actions and Indications
Traditionally used for manifestations of sinew and vessel contraction, such as calf cramps, muscle spasms, and abdominal cramping pain. In modern applications, it is commonly used for pattern-differentiated treatment of certain muscle spasms.
Precautions
- Recurrent cramps may be associated with electrolyte abnormalities, nervous system conditions, vascular factors, or medications. The cause should be evaluated as appropriate.
- Long-term or high-dose use of Gan Cao may cause problems such as edema, elevated blood pressure, and low potassium.
- People currently using diuretics or digoxin, or those with heart or kidney disease, should consult a doctor before use.
- Sudden unilateral limb swelling, pain, or weakness requires prompt medical attention.
