Run Chang Tang
Overview
Run Chang Tang originates from the Ming dynasty physician Gong Tingxian’s Wan Bing Hui Chun and is a classic formula for moistening the intestines and promoting bowel movements. The formula combines nourishing Blood and enriching Yin, moistening dryness and promoting bowel movements, and clearing Heat and moving Qi. It is mainly used for constipation caused by depleted intestinal fluids and Blood deficiency, especially in individuals with a constitution tending toward deficiency and manifestations such as dry skin.

Formula Composition
Different versions commonly use Dang Gui, Sheng Di Huang, Tao Ren, and Ma Ren as a foundation of herbs that nourish Blood and moisten dryness, and may be combined with Zhi Ke, Hou Po, or Da Huang. The specific composition should be based on the actual product instructions.
Note: Formulas with the same name may differ substantially in composition and purgative strength. No single version should be regarded as the sole standard.
Traditional Actions and Indications
Traditionally, it is mainly used for dry, hard stools and difficulty passing stool associated with Blood deficiency, depleted fluids, and intestinal dryness, often accompanied by dry mouth, relatively dry skin, or a weak constitution.
Precautions
- Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, cessation of passing gas and stool, or bloody stool requires exclusion of acute conditions such as intestinal obstruction.
- If the specific preparation contains purgative herbs such as Da Huang, it should not be self-administered continuously for an extended period.
- Pregnant individuals, children, older adults with weak constitutions, and those currently using other laxatives should consult a qualified professional.
- Chronic constipation should also be evaluated for causes such as diet, medications, and colorectal disease.
