Qing Fei Tang
Overview
Qing Fei Tang is found in Volume 2 of Wan Bing Hui Chun by Gong Tingxian of the Ming dynasty and is a classic formula for treating excessive lung heat and phlegm with coughing. It clears the Lungs, transforms phlegm, stops coughing, and alleviates wheezing. The original text used it for “all types of coughing with abundant phlegm in the upper burner.” It later became one of the commonly used Kampo formulas for the respiratory system in Japan.

Formula Composition
“Qing Fei Tang” does not have one single standardized formula. Different versions may combine different herbs, such as Scutellaria baicalensis, Cortex Mori, Platycodon grandiflorus, Fritillaria, Ophiopogon japonicus, and aged Citrus reticulata peel. The specific composition should be verified against a clearly identified source formula or the actual product instructions.
Note: Formulas with the same name may differ substantially in composition; this page does not treat any one version as the sole standard formula.
Traditional Actions and Indications
Traditional formulas with the same name are often used for cough, yellow or viscous phlegm, throat discomfort, and other manifestations associated with Lung heat, phlegm-heat, or dryness-heat. The specific applicable pattern should be determined in conjunction with the version being used.
Precautions
- Before purchasing or using it, verify the specific manufacturer’s formula, indications, and dosage form.
- Seek medical attention promptly in cases of high fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, or cough persisting for several weeks.
- People with pronounced aversion to cold or clear, thin phlegm, and other manifestations of cold should not independently choose Lung-clearing formulas based solely on “coughing.”
- Pregnant women, children, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses are advised to consult a qualified professional before use.
