Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction is a neurosis-like syndrome involving physical symptoms caused by dysfunction of organs or systems regulated by the autonomic nervous system, such as the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems. In addition to symptoms of autonomic arousal (such as palpitations, sweating, flushing, and tremor), patients experience nonspecific symptoms that are more individual and subjective, such as pain of varying location, burning, a feeling of heaviness, tightness, or swelling. Examinations cannot confirm that these symptoms are actually caused by dysfunction of the relevant organs or systems. The disorder is therefore characterized by prominent autonomic involvement, nonspecific symptoms accompanied by subjective complaints, and a persistent attribution of the symptoms to a particular organ or system.
