Traditional Actions and Indications
Traditionally used for manifestations associated with deficiency-cold of middle Yang, including severe or paroxysmal cold abdominal pain, a sensation of upward rushing in the abdomen, vomiting, and relatively cold hands and feet. In modern Kampo medicine, it is also used based on pattern differentiation for some postoperative or functional gastrointestinal motility problems.
Precautions
- Acute severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, marked abdominal distension, or cessation of passing gas or stool should first be evaluated to rule out emergencies such as intestinal obstruction.
- Do not self-administer warming and supplementing formulas in the presence of fever, marked abdominal tenderness, or bloody stool.
- People with diabetes should be mindful of preparations containing sugars such as maltose syrup.
- Pregnant women, children, older adults, and people with chronic conditions are advised to consult a qualified professional before use.
