Yi Zi Tang

Overview

Yi Zi Tang is a Kampo formula created during Japan’s Edo period by the physician Hara Nanyo. It was originally recorded in Cong Gui Ting Yi Shi Xiao Yan and is primarily used for patterns such as hemorrhoidal disease, rectal prolapse, anal pain, bleeding, and pruritus of the genital region. The original formula consisted of Bupleurum, Scutellaria, Cimicifuga, rhubarb, licorice, jujube, and ginger. It was later modified by Asada Sōhaku, who removed jujube and ginger and added Angelica root; this version was recorded in Wu Wu Yao Shi Fang Han and became the Yi Zi Tang prescription commonly used today.

Formula Composition

Common ingredients include Angelica root, Bupleurum, Scutellaria, licorice, Cimicifuga, and rhubarb.

Note: The proportions of medicinal ingredients may vary among preparations from different manufacturers and regions; refer to the actual product information.

Traditional Actions and Indications

In modern Kampo practice, it is commonly used for manifestations such as pain, swelling, mild bleeding, and a tendency toward constipation caused by hemorrhoids.

Precautions

  • Seek medical attention promptly in cases of substantial rectal bleeding, black stools, persistent severe anal pain, or accompanying fever.
  • Because the formula contains rhubarb, it should not be used independently for long-term reliance on laxative effects.
  • Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, children, and people taking anticoagulant medications should consult a qualified professional before use.
  • Recurrent hemorrhoidal bleeding should be evaluated to rule out other colorectal diseases.
