Yu Quan San

Overview

Yu Quan San originates from Ye Tianshi’s Qing-dynasty work, Clinical Guidelines with Medical Records, and is one of the traditional Chinese medicine formulas for nourishing Yin, promoting the generation of body fluids, clearing heat, and relieving thirst. Multiple formula versions exist across different medical texts, regions, and modern preparations.

Formula Composition

Yu Quan San does not have only one standardized formula. Different sources commonly center on medicinals that promote the generation of body fluids, relieve thirst, nourish Yin, and clear heat. The specific composition should be determined according to the package insert of the product being used or a clearly identified source formula.

Note: Because formulas with the same name may differ considerably, this page does not treat any single version as the only standard formula.

Traditional Actions and Indications

Traditional formulas with this name are generally used for manifestations such as thirst, dry mouth, and insufficient body fluids. Some modern preparations are also used as adjunctive regulation based on pattern differentiation in Chinese medicine for thirst associated with abnormal glucose metabolism, but they cannot replace blood glucose monitoring or standardized treatment.

Precautions

  • Persistent thirst, increased drinking, increased urination, or weight loss should prompt testing of blood glucose and other relevant indicators.
  • People with diabetes must not discontinue glucose-lowering medication or insulin on their own.
  • Before purchasing or using the product, verify the specific manufacturer’s formula to avoid misuse resulting from differences among formulas with the same name.
  • Pregnant women, children, and people with chronic diseases are advised to consult a professional before use.
